Statement: Turning flat pieces of paper into three-dimensional structures gives me the most intense joy and excitement, making the hours spent in the studio seem like mere minutes. My two structures in this exhibit represent two distinctive methods in my creative process.
Make Believe is a carefully planned, developed, and executed work based on the format of the Byzantine traveling icons of my heritage. My beloved doll takes the place of the saint usually depicted in those treasured icons, worshiped by generations of owners who passed them down to their offspring as a most valued gift of spiritual and healing power.
In Repose is the product of carefree and joyful experimentation. It approaches the notion of playtime that all of us need and every now and then manage to indulge. Dipping coffee filters in a pool of ink and then seeing their bordered translucence, I felt as if they dictated all the next steps: multiplying them, folding and grouping them, noticing their need for movement, capturing the movement. Better described: in repose.
